Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

+ WHAT ARE THE AGE RESTRICTIONS FOR KAYAKS?

The minimum age for a kayak rider is 5 years of age. Anyone between the ages of 5 and 15 must sit in the front of a double kayak with someone 19 years of age or older.

+ DO I NEED ANY PREVIOUS KAYAKING EXPERIENCE TO ATTEND A TOUR?

No previous experience required! Our trips are designed to cater to all levels of experience and abilities. On our Guided Sea Kayak Tours, both on-shore and on-water instruction is provided. All of our guides are highly competent paddlers and are certified in sea kayaking in Canada. Our guides are there to answer any questions, to manage risk and ensure your safety, and to share their local knowledge of the area. We take care of everything, so you can relax and enjoy yourself!

+ WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SINGLE KAYAK AND A DOUBLE KAYAK?

We have both single and double kayaks available! Double kayaks are faster and more stable since they hold two paddlers. We often recommend beginners and people who are nervous about paddling to sit in a double kayak. They are also a great way for adults to paddle with young children, and they make excellent platforms for photography. Their drawback is that they are steered from the back, so both paddlers need to agree on the direction they are heading in. Single kayaks are more agile and allow individual paddlers to move more freely. However, for newer paddlers, they may feel ‘tippy’ and, as a result, are harder to maneuver.

+ WHAT DO YOU PROVIDE US ON A TOUR?

On every guided tour, we provide you with a Kayak, paddle, a nd a personal flotation device (PFD). Your highly experienced and professionally certified guide carries all necessary safety gear, including flares, a compass, a radio, a tow belt, and other equipment.

+ WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Plan on getting wet! In the summer months, we recommend water shoes, or sturdy close-toed shoes, a long sleeve shirt and splash top or windbreaker on top. Dress in layers and wear clothing that will wick away perspiration and keep you dry and comfortable. Avoid heavy cotton clothing (like jeans). Hats, sunglasses (on a rope!), and sunscreen are also important to bring along.

+ WILL OUR TOUR CONTINUE IN THE RAIN, WIND AND FOG?

If the weather is unsafe for any reason, the trip will be cancelled or postponed. Our guides are experienced in marine weather interpretation and always keep a close eye on any rapidly changing weather patterns. If we have any safety concerns in regard to weather, we will be in touch on the day of the tour. There will be no charge if we cancel the tour due to weather.

+ CAN I TAKE PHOTOS ON THE WATER?

Yes, of course! There will be plenty of opportunities to take photos, and we actually encourage it since we will be passing by many beautiful landscapes! We provide small drybags for electronics that can be sealed and clipped to your PFD for easy access. If photography is the main purpose of your tour, please contact us ahead of time and we will develop an itinerary that meets your needs!

+ HOW STABLE ARE THE KAYAKS? WHAT IS THE LIKELIHOOD OF FLIPPING OVER?

Our sea kayaks are stable and designed for comfort. The likelihood of capsizing is minimal. Our guides are experienced, certified professionals who undergo extensive rescue training. In the unlikely event of a capsize, we place full confidence in our guides to react accordingly and keep you safe. If you are nervous about capsizing, we recommend paddling in a double kayak rather than a single, since they are more stable.
